for morning sickness and for the first time one of kate's relatives is talking about her pregnancy. >> what is your reaction about the news to duchess of cambridge. >> how do you know i'm not a radio station? >> this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, december 7, 2012. good morning. good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. a strong earthquake hit northeastern japan this morning, the magnitude 7.3 quake struck in the early evening in the same area that suffered a powerful quake and tsunami last year. a tsunami warning has been issued. residents have been told to move to higher ground. the fukushima nuclear plant has not been damaged. the quake was felt as far south as tokyo. lucy craft is in tokyo. what can you tell us?

>> reporter: no reports of damage or injury. it's still way too early. we have a tsunami warning. the tide is about three feet or two meters or one meter, i should say. very interesting, this time the warnings came very fast and furious. the announcer was yelling at people to get to higher ground. big difference this year. >> we were watching in our newsroom as the alerts came in. what did you feel, what did you experience there? was it anything noticeable? >> i was talking to someone on the phone and she said she should get off the phone, this is a big one. my windows were rattling. my pictures, i thought i was going to have to grab them before they fell off. fortunately they didn't. a much more powerful earthquake than we're used to. >> early indications, are you seeing people taking this seriously? what has the response been from people? >> you know, tokyo, again we're pretty far away from the area

where the tsunami and the major magnitude was felt this time around but i don't think anyone is fooling around this time. people are very serious about getting to higher ground. that was the message of disaster in 2011. i don't think anybody is hesitating this time. >> lucy craft joining us from tokyo. we'll have more on this story coming up a little later on cbs "this morning." more protests are expected in the streets of egypt today during a phone conversation, president obama told president mohamed morsi that the violence there is unacceptable. at least six people have been killed as morsi supporters and opponents fought outside of the presidential palace. opponents marched on the palace last night calling on morsi to step down. but in a speech to the nation he refused to compromise. holly williams is in cairo. holly, good morning to you. what's the latest there? >> reporter: some people hope that after days of protest and bloodshed president morsi would make a major concession when he addressed the nation but he

didn't do that. his opponents want to have him immediately give up all of the sweeping new powers that he gave himself two weeks ago and postpone a referendum on egypt's new constitution which is due to take place in over a week. critics say the constitution doesn't protect the rights of all egyptians. president morsi didn't do either of those thing. instead he offered to give up just one of his new powers, a vaguely worded right to take any necessary measures to protect the country. he would give up all of his new powers once the referendum has taken place. >> you mentioned president morsi addressing the egyptian people. what has the response been on the street? >> reporter: well there were thousands of anti-morsi protesters outside of the presidential palace. they listened to the speech and many listened with dismay. many started chanting a slogan we heard two years ago during the egyptian revolution, the people want the downfall of the regime. also yesterday we had that phone

call from president obama to president morsi that he expressed his deep concern over the violence and deaths that have taken place and also urged president morsi to have a dialogue with the opposition without any pre-conditions. >> holly williams in cairo for us this morning. thank you so much. to the crisis now in syria. there are growing fears this morning that as opposition forces advance, a desperate assad regime may consider using chemical weapons. as events on the ground pick up speed so do diplomatic efforts. susan mcginnis has details on a high level meeting between the u.s. and russia. susan, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. intelligence reports are suggesting as this regime gets closer to falling, syrian president, bashir al assad could release sirin gas on the people

there to subdue the rebellion. this would be a new phase of the war. it has the u.s. uniting with russia to stop it and some here on capitol hill calling for u.s. military intervention. rockets streak across the syrian sky as the battle between rebel forces and troops move to outskirts of the capital of damascus. jeffrey white says it's only a matter time before the bloody civil war is over. >> you can feel it. you can sense it. looks like the regime is being defeated. >> reporter: intelligence officials say chemical weapons believed to be stored at this syrian base have been primed and ready for use. >> we remain very concerned. very concerned that as the opposition advances in particular on damascus, that the regime might very well consider the use of chemical weapons. >> reporter: so far the u.s. has been very reluctant to use military force to help the overthrow of syrian president bashar al assad. reports he is considering using chemical weapons have some on capitol hill now calling for the

president to get tough with the dictator. >> we urge the president of the united states to make whatever military preparations are necessary to show assad that the united states is fully willing and able to impose the consequences that he's spoken of in the event these weapons are used. >> reporter: secretary of state hillary clinton met with her russian counterpart thursday to secure russia's support. >> the international community, specifically the russians are united on this issue. >> reporter: all sides hope the first sign of a diplomatic issue to end the syrian war. the syrian government has promised not to use any chemical weapons against the people there but the fear is that as assad starts to topple, as the fighting increases in the suburbs of damascus he may feel cornered and no telling what he might do. >> susan mcginnis in washington on a friday morning. thank you so much. in this country president obama says cutting a deal to avoid the

>> the first family flipped the switch for the 90th annual lighting of the christmas tree. the 28-foot blue spruce is on the ellipse. a crowd of about 17,000 people were on hand for the event which included holiday musical performances. cbs moneywatch. crunching job numbers and netflix in trouble for a facebook post. ashley morrison has more. >> reporter: good morning. we'll find out today just how much superstorm sandy slowed job growth when the labor department releases the november employment report. on thursday the government reported weekly applications for jobless benefits fell sharply. the decline suggests the return to modest job growth that plunged during sandy's aftermath. some economists believe fewer than 100,000 jobs were added in november but others say if not for sandy job gains would have been at their highest since february. asian markets were lower.

tokyo's nikkei lost a fraction while the hong kong hang seng also shed a fraction. michigan a long time bedrock of union employment could soon become the nation's 24th right to work state. protesters rallied at the state house and senate on thursday. both chambers passed separate bills banning mandatory union dues from non-union members. the republican governor said he would sign the bill when they are sent to him. tech stocks gave wall street a modest lift. the dow finished 39 points higher on thursday while the nasdaq was up 15 points. apple one of the tech stocks that led the stock market said it will move some of its mass computer production from china to the u.s. it accounts for less than 20% of apple's business. the rest is from ipod and ipad production. one factor may be that tiny labor costs are rising much faster than u.s. wages. and the securities and exchange commission is investigating

recovering from an illness related to her pregnancy with her first child. we have a report now from london. >> reporter: the duchess of cambridge smiled as she made her first public appearance since the royal family announced she's pregnant. she and her husband prince william left the london hospital where kate spent three nights for severe morning sickness. the duchess was still feeling symptoms, she didn't show it. she told the press she was doing much better. she was bundled up to guard against the cold and to protect the royal bundle of joy. >> great end to a great year. everybody is excited. >> reporter: kate will take it easy at the couple's london home. the duchess has cancelled all of her public events for the weekend. >> we're excited about it. >> reporter: prince charles the soon to be grandfather said he's thrilled will and kate are having a baby. >> very nice to be a grandfather in my old age. splendid.

i'm glad my daughter-in-law is getting better thank goodness. >> reporter: medical experts say kate's condition which causes vomiting and dehydration sometimes lasts the entire pregnancy. the duchess has at least six months to go before the royal baby is born. when he was asked by reporters about the royal pregnancy prince charles first thought was to quip about the prank phone call kate's hospital received this week. >> what's your reaction about the news? >> as you know i'm not a radio station. >> a little hot about that thing isn't he. two australian radio dee jays impersonated charles and his mom queen elizabeth and able to get some information about kate's condition. they later apologized for the hoax. >> a showdown before the best and worst. peyton manning take their game to oakland.

outside pittsburgh a town hit hard by the economy is finding strength from its local football team. as wyatt andrews reports, the team is beating the odds and lifting the community. >> reporter: clarendon, pennsylvania is a proud steel mill town, but more than 10,000 jobs have been lost over decades, poverty has doubled the national average and most of downtown is boarded up. the one public school is so small the state might have closed it by now except for one

extraordinary thing. the clarendon bears high school football team. this weekend the bears are in the playoffs to win a fourth straight state championship and their winning streak of 61 games is the best in america. >> we're making history, we're making a name for ourselves. >> reporter: one of the team's stars, tarish webb says the secret is the team's seniors. they've played together since they were 6 years old in midget football and grew up determined to win for themselves and for the town. >> if we lose that's actually letting them down so we owe to it the town. >> somebody might be inclined to ask you hey, son, it's just football. >> i think it's more than football. this football has taken us to college, helping us on the right path so we think football is life. people may argue in the streets but on friday night everybody here is chanting for the bears.

>> reporter: part of the team's motivation is escaping the violence on the streets of clarendon, one of their coaches was killed four years ago. webb's father was murdered when he was 11. >> do you think about your dad when you play? >> yes. every game. >> reporter: now, webb and several seniors have scholarship offers and all 16 seniors have the grades and ambition to move on. >> how many of you are going to college? 100% of you are going to college? congratulations. >> reporter: and that has made them role models for future generations of bears. tom mccloskey, a clarendon graduate is now the school's principal. >> i keep hearing word about this senior class, respectful. >> to themselves, to the community, to adults, and to their younger classmen. >> is that unusual? >> i think it's unusual to see it in this many kids for this long of a time. >> reporter: it's a lot to ask
